In October 2019, the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam and the Institute of Development and Policy Research (IDPR), Addis Ababa University signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a joint PhD programme. This MoU was followed by a joint PhD agreement signed in March 2021.
At the end of the programme, successful PhD researchers will receive a doctorate degree certificate from both ISS and AAU. Both certificates will indicate the joint supervision and cooperation between the institutes and will refer to the single PhD degree.

- Unemployment/employment creation
- Indigenous knowledge
Research location
PhD candidates will conduct their research and write their thesis in alternating periods at both universities. Candidates will spend at least 12 months in both universities, the period and duration of which will be agreed between the supervisors of both universities.
