When corona meets deglobalization

Published on the Elgar blog, in this post, Professor Peter van Bergeijk discusses the current period of deglobalization caused by the corona crisis and compares it to earlier periods of deglobalization.

Looking at the period from 1880 onwards, he considers what impact the Spanish Flu pandemic had on the Great Depression that followed it and asks whether we can draw parallels with the current pandemic.

He goes on to consider what lessons we can learn from these earlier crises and asks whether, in this current context, we can and should remain optimistic about the global economy.
