Successful PhD defence by Delphin Ntanyoma

'What makes people (dis)engage with violence?'

On 12 May 2022, Delphin Ntanyoma successfully defended his PhD thesis investigating why individual combatants engage and disengage with armed groups in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

His thesis revealed the motives of individuals to engage, or not, in violence.

The results of his research showed that vulnerability to poverty and to violence plays an important role in armed mobilization and suggested that discontent arising from relative deprivation plays a central role.
