Hosted by the Oñati International Institute for the Sociology of Law (IISL), this workshop will undertake an analysis of the moral, legal and social dynamics of contemporary protests and their influence on political institutions.
Co-organized by Associate Professor, Dr Jeff Handmaker and colleagues from Erasmus University Rotterdam and Universidad del PaÃs Vasco, the workshop will investigate the possibility of enhancing the impact of contemporary protest on the representativeness, pluralism, openness, effectiveness and dialogue of contemporary democratic and rule-of-law based political systems.
To this end, it is necessary to understand how the infrastructure of protests functions and how protest interlinks with other forms of political engagement and participation such as voting and everyday parliamentary decision making.
Among the international participants, the International Institute of Social Studies will be sending three delegates to the workshop:
- Dr Jeff Handmaker - Associate Professor of Legal Sociology at ISS (and co-organizer)
- Ms Daniela Raad Sierra, Research Fellow at the Legal Mobilization Platform
- Ms Lee Anne de la Hunt, Research Fellow at the Legal Mobilization Platform
