Researchers, PhD students and alumni from the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) are taking an active role in the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), which kicked of on 11 November in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Overview

Towards sustainable living communities

ISS alumna Victoria Manya, PhD researcher at Leiden University and Knowledge Broker of INCLUDE Platform, will moderate the side event dialogue, Towards sustainable living communities, in collaboration with INCLUDE Platform, Global Law Thinkers Society (GLTS), Connected Advocacy for Empowerment & Youth Development Initiative and Daffodil International University.

Panelists will discuss actionable recommendations for labour-based incentives and youth-centric policies to drive a just transition.

Fashion Trends for Climate Change after 2030

Luciana dos Santos Duarte, a double-degree PhD researcher in Development Studies at ISS and Production Engineering at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil), will present 10 trends in technology for fashion in a world with extreme temperatures and more disasters on Thursday, 14 November. Trends include from adaptation to become nocturnal, development of surviving kits, to the aestheticization of Climate Change in dystopian narratives. 

Her presentation is part of the panel Fashion and Climate Change after 2030: Sustainability and ESG Trends Shaping the Future of the Apparel Industry, featuring key representatives from Brazil’s fashion sector, including Heads of Sustainability from Lojas Renner and Lunelli Textil.

Launch event for PCCB focus area 2025 - Capacity-building for investment strategies and bankable projects for NDCs and NAPs

In this launch event, the PCCB (Paris Committee on Capacity-Building) will present their planned activities under the 2025 Focus Area, and the opportunities for stakeholders to contribute to these activities, as well as insights from other bodies and processes to better deliver on its 2025 Focus Area. 

Kerricia Hobson, ISS alumna who graduated in 2013 from the Agrarian and Environmental Studies programme, will moderate the panel discussion. She represents the Small Island Developing States (SIDS),

Just climate action from mountain to sea: Barriers and opportunities for addressing loss and damage

Hyeonggeun Ji will present insights from his fieldwork in Bangladesh as a part of the Humanitarian Governance research project in a panel with experts from Rutgers University and Oxford Policy Management.

PhD researcher Luciana dos Santos Duarte will also moderate the panel ESG at Lunelli: Best Practice for companies in the Fashion Industry on Friday, 15 November.This event will explore the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles at Lunelli highlighting successful strategies for sustainable sourcing, ethical labour practices and transparent governance.

Refugee women & Indigenous knowledges: Building capacities, bridging gaps

Umbreen Salim, founder of SEEK Feminist Research to Response and ISS PhD researcher, will speak in this session to promote the 'Technical Guide on Integrating Human Mobility and Climate Change Interlinkages' as a supplement to National Adaptation Plans, targeting representatives from governments, international organizations, civil society, the private sector and migrants. It aims to empower refugee women by providing a platform to share their capacity-building needs and innovative, Indigenous knowledge on climate resilience

Rethinking Climate Displacement: Disaster, Socio-Political Drivers, and Anticipatory Action

Dr Rodrigo Mena and PhD researcher Hyeonggeun Ji will join other international experts to explore critical pathways for accelerating climate action, advancing policy frameworks, and fostering innovative and up-to-date debates on climate change, migration and disasters. 

The researchers will host a panel at the Climate Mobility Pavilion organized by the Global Centre for Climate Mobility / Climate Mobility Pavilion

The Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre (HSC) of ISS, represented by Dr Mena and Mr Ji will host a dialogue titled Rethinking Climate Displacement: Disaster, Socio-Political Drivers, and Anticipatory Action. This event aims to deepen understanding of climate-related displacement by examining complex, multi-hazard interactions and socio-political factors and the possibilities of anticipatory action, challenging oversimplified narratives of climate-induced displacement.
