Legal briefings, a podcast series and press engagement on the situation in Gaza
Dr Jeff Handmaker
In 2024 I produced 6 legal briefings and had multiple press appearances in relation to the situation in Gaza.
Specifically, I was involved in the production of a four-part podcast series, 'Special Untold Stories about occupied Palestine' with various guests, co-organized with Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese. This is one of the outcomes of a 2-year long research project with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Occupied Palestine, in partnership with the Legal Mobilization Platform, of which ISS hosts the Secretariat.
The podcasts were an opportunity to carefully study 4 key dimensions of the latest impasse between the State of Israel and the Palestinians:
- Podcast 1 - The legal and political character of non-state groups (as terrorists or as national liberation movements?) with Dr Tareq Baconi and Dr Shahd Hammouri
- Podcast 2 - The legal, social and political character of genocide with Dr Raz Segal, Dr Jonah Schulhofer-Wohl and Dr Zbeidy
- Podcast 3 - The process and implications of the current investigation by the International Criminal Court with Ms Katherine Gallagher and Mr Ahmed Abofoul
- Podcast 4 - The implications of the case brought by South Africa in the International Court of Justice, charging Israel with violating the Genocide Convention, and subsequent provisional measures with Dr Giulia Pinzauti and Dr Christopher Gevers
I was also involved in several events and media outputs on the situation in Gaza:
- Gaza at the ICJ: A Legal Briefing, which had approximately 700 participants
- Gaza at the ICC: Seeking Justice for Palestinian displacement amid genocide, also with numerous in-person and online participants
- Multiple engagements with the media in relation to these developments
