Anand Kole (India)

MA in Development Studies

Name: Anand Kole

Major: Economics of Development

Country: India

What is your background?

I studied economics, political science, and sociology during my undergraduate years in India, which gave me a solid foundation in understanding how societies work. My love for economics comes from its ability to make a real difference in people’s lives. Growing up, I often talked to my aunt, who is an ISS alumna, about her experiences in Europe and the unique way ISS approaches development studies. Her stories really inspired me and played a big part in my decision to pursue a master’s in Economics of Development here.

Why study abroad?

Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine, as it offers the chance to gain new perspectives and expand my understanding of the world. I was particularly drawn to the European education system for its emphasis on qualitative research and its application to real-world societal challenges.

At ISS, I’ve been able to explore topics that connect economics to everyday life, such as inequality, health economics, and the impact of natural disasters. This comprehensive approach has deepened my understanding of how development can address pressing global issues and shaped my academic and personal growth.

Why did you choose ISS?

ISS stood out to me for its multidisciplinary approach to development studies, offering a diverse range of courses, from econometric modeling to social justice and climate action. This aligns perfectly with my interests in understanding the broader societal impact of economic policies.

The reputation of ISS was also a major factor. As part of Erasmus University Rotterdam, ISS is recognized as one of the leading institutions in development studies globally. The diversity of the student body and faculty creates a vibrant learning environment that encourages collaboration and critical thinking. These elements made ISS the ideal choice for me.

What are your future plans?
Initially, I wanted to pursue a career in public policy. But during my time at ISS, my focus has shifted towards research and academia. My short-term goal is to complete a PhD, and in the long term, I plan to return to India. While India is on the path of development, it faces numerous challenges.

I believe that academics is the best platform for creating change by shaping how future generations understand and engage with society. I also aim to contribute to policy advisory committees, combining my academic work with practical impact—achieving two goals in one effort.
