Why development depends on dialogue and dissent

Writing in the Dutch development journal, Vice Versa, ISS alumnus Ben Phillips argues that tackling inequality and ensuring more incluse growth is dependent on a vibrant civil society that is not afraid of dissent.

He praises in particular the Dutch government's recognition that active citizenship and healthy debate are not just nice-to-haves but are essential for effective development.
