Using citizen science data to monitor the Sustainable Development Goals

Reaching remote locations and marginalized populations

Data collected by citizens employing a wide range of technologies and methodologies can help to improve the monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensure that data is collected from remote locations, about marginalized populations and that it is free from government manipulation.

This article investigates the link between citizen science data (CSD) and the SDGs.

Published in Sustainability Science, the article aims to develop an empirical understanding of the CSD-SDG link by focusing on the perspective of projects which employ CSD. It presents data from 30 such projects on an explorative comparative case study.

The authors find that although projects which use CSD recognize that the SDGs can provide a valuable framework and legitimacy, the projects also face barriers which may deter them from contributing their data to the SDG monitoring apparatus.
