On 8 December 2023, Yanbai Li successfully defended his thesis investigating the economic and political consequences of China's trade shock in developing countries.
In his thesis, Yanbai Li argued that China's establishement as a manufacturing hub at the turn of the 21st century altered global trade patterns.
His focus was on the consequences of China’s demand for natural resources in the global market, touching upon the political consequences of China’s rising trade with African countries. He examined some of the economic effects of China’s trade shock in the raw commodity market in developing countries and explained variation in inequality across countries by the ownership type of capital.
