On 7 December 2020, William Orie successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled 'Obstacles to Financing Facing Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Firms in Suriname: A study from a small-state perspective'.
His thesis investigated the extent and nature of the obstacles to financing faced by micro, small, and medium-sized firms (MSMEs) in Suriname.
His research found that MSMEs mainly use internal financial resources, commercial banks and private capital to finance their working and investment capital. Commercial banks are the most important source of external financing for firms in the country.
