From 8 April 2025, the International Institute of Social Studies will be hosting the 'Picking Fruit, Sowing Stories' exhibition exploring agricultural and peasant celebrations in different parts of Europe.

The co-created, interactive pop-up exhibition explores how agricultural and peasant celebrations take place in different parts of Europe, and how migrant workers in the Netherlands and Belgium create new rituals and stories.
Through local agricultural rituals such as blossom blessings or harvest festivals, the exhibition reflects on horticulture and its significance for history, nature, culture and community.
Today, horticulture is more large-scale than ever, connecting people and places across the world. What would it mean to include migrant workers in these local rituals, and to bless their labour? And what about the agricultural rituals they leave behind?
Come see, listen, and interact with the exhibition in the ISS Atrium! The opening will follow the event Migrant farmworkers’ struggles for decent work and housing – Netherlands and US compared.
The exhibition has been co-curated by Carolien Lubberhuizen and Winona Boomkens.
