ISS is very sad to hear that one of its honorary fellows, Professor Rodolfo Stavenhagen has passed away at the age of 84.
Rodolfo Stavenhagen was awarded his ISS honorary fellowship in 1982. He was a professor at El Colegio de México and former Deputy Director General of UNESCO. In 2001 he was appointed the first United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people.
Born in Frankfurt in 1932, Professor Stavenhagen settled in Mexico with his family in 1940. He was well-known and respected in Mexico as an intellectual, sociologist and anti-racist activist.
His links with ISS remained close: just last year he worked with Rosalba Icaza and dozens of indigenous community representatives in Mexico to launch the international consortium on diversity and interculturality 'Tejiendo Voces' (Weaving Voices).
Professor Stavenhagen will be sorely missed in the academic community. The condolences of the ISS community go out to his family.
