Senior Lecturer Kristen Cheney to participate in expert panel during side event to the 34th session of the UN Human Rights Council on illegal adoption.
The event is being organized by UN Special Rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, Ms Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, on the 8th of March at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.
Dr. Cheney will open the special session with a presentation on ‘The Orphan Industrial Complex: creating an enabling environment for illegal adoptions’.
The presentation will address the broader economy around orphans (fundraising, orphan tourism and volunteering, establishing orphanages, and so on) -- of which adoption is but one end of the spectrum. This will help widen the discussions to consider some of the issues that are not currently in Ms. de Boer-Buquicchio’s draft report on illegal adoption but which contribute significantly to an 'enabling environment' for illegality in adoption.
