Dr Karim Knio has been elected as president of the International Association for Critical Realism (IACR), a role he will hold for two years starting in 2025.
About IACR
Since its founding in 1997, IACR has provided a vital network and resources for scholars in realist philosophy and social theory. Its activities include annual conferences, pre-conference programmes for PhD candidates and early career researchers, and an annual book prize recognizing innovative contributions to the field. The association also facilitates the publication of the Journal for Critical Realism, where Dr Knio serves as an associate editor.
Dr Knio has made significant contributions to IACR and the broader field of critical realism. Notably, he organized the Realist Complexity between Causal and Complex Systems conference at ISS in 2022, featuring esteemed scholars such as the late Margaret Archer, Douglas Porpora, Philip Gorski, Alan Norrie and many others.
Fostering connections
As IACR president, Dr Knio is committed to fostering stronger connections among critical realist communities and centers worldwide, such as with the Centre for Critical Realism. In his capacity as the scientific director of CERES research school for international development (CERES), he will attempt to create new potential research synergies and provide more opportunities for further institutional collaboration.
A hub for critical realism
Dr Knio envisions building upon ISS’ reputation in the field of development studies by also making it a key hub for critical realism research. Supported by various colleagues, Dr Knio and his team of PhD researchers and postdoctoral fellows have advanced critical realism through their work on crisis analysis and complexity. Central to this is their engagement with innovative approaches like the Immanent Causality Morphogenetic Approach (ICMA) and Morphogenetic Régulation (MR).
