ISS well-represented during IMF Conference on Gender and Macroeconomics

Women in Pakistan loose out in macro-economic ‘business as usual’. This was a key message that ISS Senior Lecturer Karin Astrid Siegmann delivered to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF’s) Conference on Gender and Macroeconomics in Washington DC, US from 23-24 March 2017.

For economic empowerment of women in Pakistan, Siegmann argued, a gender-sensitive policy for wage-led growth is required. In her opening remarks, Christine Lagarde, IMF Managing Director, reminded the participants that an event like this would have been unthinkable at IMF five years back.

The ISS was well-represented during this first conference of its kind. Besides Siegmann’s paper titled 'Has Growth Been Good for Women’s Employment in Pakistan?' (co-authored by Hadia Majid), PhD scholar Umbreen Salim and MA alumna Anila Noor presented their poster on 'Women and Will: Success Strategies from Pakistan'.
