Meet Amartya Gautam, a proud alumnus of ISS, who is making waves in Indonesia as the Country Head of Redmi. Amartya's story is not just about success, it is about inspiring our current students.
Back in 2016, Amartya graduated from the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) with a major in Economics of Development. Little did he know then that his journey would lead him to become a leader in the tech industry. Today, he is at the forefront of shaping Redmi's strategy in Indonesia, a smartphone market worth billions of dollars.
But Amartya's journey did not start with Redmi. Before leading Redmi Indonesia, he played a key role in driving growth for Xiaomi's startup project in India, focusing on a short video app. His efforts led to the app becoming one of the top players in the Indian market, reaching over 50 million monthly active users.
Reflecting on his time at ISS, Amartya acknowledges that his career path is unique. However, his background in Economics of Development provided the foundation for his journey into the world of technology and emerging markets. ‘My journey is certainly unconventional for an ISS graduate,’ he remarks, ‘yet representative of how we can take diverse paths to change the world.’ He also emphasizes the importance of gaining a global perspective, both in mind and experience. ‘Attending ISS sparked a curiosity within me that led to backpacking through China, meeting startup entrepreneurs, and venturing into the intersection between technology, capital investments, and emerging market economies.’
Amartya's story is an inspiration to current and future ISS students, showing that with passion, hard work, and a global mindset, anything is achievable. As he continues to innovate and make an impact in the tech industry, we celebrate his achievements and eagerly anticipate the mark he will continue to leave.
