The Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre, hosted at the International Institute of Social Studies, is launching its new podcast ‘The Good Humanitarian’: a podcast delving into the dilemmas, issues around and big questions in Humanitarian Studies.
With more and more crises affecting more and more everyday people around the world, it has never been more important or interesting to look at the big questions surrounding societies in crisis.
Humanitarian Studies is the study of societies undergoing humanitarian crisis. The first series of The Good Humanitarian podcast looks at some of the biggest questions including humanitarian ethics and accountability, displacement and refugees, humanitarian neutrality, what happens when a disaster happens in the middle of a conflict and much more.
What the podcast has in store
The first series of ‘The Good Humanitarian’ features researchers from The Hague Humanitarian Studies Centre, including Thea Hilhorst, Rodrigo Mena Fluhmann, Kaira Zoe Cañete and Sonja Fransen. The first episodes are:
Episode 1 ‘Thousands of crises, thousands of responses’ looks at why, if humanitarian crises are all so different, the response is usually similar?
Episode 2 'Humanitarians are always good, right?’ challenges the commonly held perception that humanitarian actors always act in the best interests of the people they are trying to help.
Episode 3 ‘The climate is changing, and people are moving’ considers the implications of climate change on forced displacement and begins to scratch the surface of how humanitarians and societies in crisis work with refugees.
Episode 4 ‘Making a bad situation much worse: what happens when a disaster happens in the middle of a conflict?’ is an interesting look into what happens when a disaster (‘no natural disasters’ here!) happens in a conflict or war zone.
Episode 5 ‘Can humanitarians ever be neutral?’ questions how humanitarians can maintain ‘neutrality’ in some of the most challenging contexts in the world.
