On 27 March 2019, Kristen Cheney, Associate Professor at the International Institute of Social Studies participated in a Dutch Parliamentary roundtable on orphanage tourism entitled 'A good intention is not always a good idea: A proposal to combat orphanage tourism'
The roundtable included speakers from various international NGOs and academic experts.
Dutch Parliament will debate the topic on 8 April 2019.

On 8 April 2019, the Dutch Parliament held a debate (in Dutch) on stopping orphanage tourism. There was a broad support from all parties present with much reference to the experts who participated in the roundtable on 27 March. The Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Sigrid Kaag, promised research into the scope, numbers, countries, funding streams and possibilities of rules and regulations that are within her reach. She will consult other ministries (mainly justice and education) and the national rapporteur human trafficking. Before July 2019 she will present Parliament with a planning and research questions.
