How remarkable that European countries now open their borders for refugees from Ukraine whereas we were used to quite some resistance previously. What happened?
Professor of Humanitarian Aid Thea Hilhorst, argues in Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant that Ukrainian people are Europeans with a history that’s connected to our own. And there is more sympathy of the rest of the world in this sudden war in Ukraine (like with disasters such as earthquakes or floods), compared to responses to long-lasting conflicts.
Hilhorst warns that this positive response should not have a negative impact on time and resources for refugees like the Eighurs and the Afghans.
