Curious about a programme that combines engineering with social sciences and entrepreneurship with environmental studies, all while tackling real-world challenges? You’ll find that in the Frugal Innovation for Sustainable Global Development Minor. This isn’t just another class. Since August 2024, Leiden, Delft and Erasmus University students dove into a curriculum designed to make a real impact. Each week, they explore what it takes to create sustainable solutions for communities worldwide – whether it is restoring reefs in the Netherlands or designing affordable housing for hurricane-prone St. Martin.
Learning by doing
The Frugal Innovation for Sustainable Global Development programme is hands-on from day one. Led by experts like Dr Saradindu Bhaduri and Prof Cees van Beers, students tackle everything from frugal innovation theory to building practical tools like water filters.
Students in our Bootcamp, led by Ms Betty Huerta, explore the cultural and emotional dimensions of working in diverse communities. They engage in workshops on personal reflection and community interactions, building skills they will use in field assignments worldwide, from South Africa to Vietnam.
Real impact, real skills
The minor empowers students to become Frugal Innovators ready to make a difference. With a foundation in entrepreneurship from mentors like Albert Kraaij and real-world assignments, students develop business models that drive sustainable impact and empower communities worldwide.
