'Critical Realism and the Persistence of Poor School Performance in Northern Colombia. The difference it makes'

On 7 December 2018, Juan David Parra Heredia successfully defended his PhD thesis on 'Critical Realism and The Persistence of Poor School Performance in Northern Colombia. The difference it makes'.

In his thesis he focuses on the study of the persistence of poor school performance amongst Colombian secondary school students, introducing the ontology of critical realism to compensate for the failure of other research paradigms in informing this phenomenon.

He argues that any causal claim in social sciences requires an inquiry that recognizes the autonomous, yet intervening, properties of educational structures and the agency of people (i.e. students, parents, teachers) in the making of education policy.
