'The case for democracy' webinar

In this free-to-access webinar, Professor Mansoob Murshed will discuss the need for social protection in developing countries as a way of addressing the growing tide of economic inequality.

On 23 March 2021, Professor of the Economics of Peace and Conflict at the International Institute of Social Studies, Mansoob Murshed, will be one of the speakers at 'The Case for Democracy Week' webinar series organized by the V-Dem Institute.

In his lecture, 'Democratic Institutions, Fiscal Capacity, and Social Welfare Outcomes in Developing Countries', he will discuss the need for social protection in developing countries as a way of addressing the growing tide of economic inequality. He will highlight the importance of both economic or fiscal capacity, as well as a democratic polity.

Murshed's lecture is based on his recent publication Murshed, S. M., Bergougui, B., Badiuzzaman, M., & Pulok, M. H. (2020) 'Fiscal Capacity, Democratic Institutions and Social Welfare Outcomes in Developing Countries' Defense and Peace Economics, 1-26.
