In this new blog post on ISS blog BLISS, Dorothea Hilhorst looks at what the debate on Zwarte Piet is all about, and how can it provide us with insights on everyday racism in the Netherlands.
Hilhorst emphasizes that while the protest against Zwarte Piet is growing in the Netherlands, it is important to note that the tradition is not under attack. Furthermore, nobody wants to ban the tradition of Sinterklaas, the protesters just want a minor adaptation to Zwarte Piet.
She talks about the proposed alternatives and the psychology behind everyday racism in the Netherlands. Even though alternatives seem simple and doable, yet the Netherlands continues to be utterly divided over the matter.
