ISS part of a coalition of eleven environmental and human rights groups and local community groups which have recently been awarded a grant of 14.8 million euros by the Dutch National Postcode Lottery.
The coalition is led by Hivos and Greenpeace and includes the Association of Indigenous Peoples in the Amazon (COICA), Digital Democracy, the World Resources Institute (WRI), the University of Maryland (UMD), INTERPOL LEAF, and the NGOS Both ENDS, WITNESS and ARTICLE 19.
The project All Eyes on the Amazon will combine modern technologies, such as satellites, drones and tablets, with the centuries old knowledge of the Indigenous inhabitants of the Amazon in an attempt to halt deforestation.
Murat Arsel and Lorenzo Pellegrini lead the ISS component of the project focusing on Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. They are supported by post-doctoral fellow Marti Orta as well as Universidad San Francisco de Quito. This builds on the capacity and research support by the ISS research team to indigenous groups in the Amazon for more than a decade.
