Join us on 1 October 2024 for the valedictory lecture by Professor Peter van Bergeijk. His lecture will offer unconventional observations on some missing Erasmian Values in the academic discourse, the unscientific nature of economics and the critical connection between art and science.
Van Bergeijk has produced a visual summary of his inaugural lecture. In it he presents the causes of inaccuarate economic observations and suggests an agenda for change to deal with these.
Peter van Bergeijk is uniquely positioned to reflect on life after Erasmus.
He started in 1978 as an economics student at Woudestijn Campus and after a career as a working student (mailman, dock worker, teacher, private banker) became assistant professor at Groningen University where he defended his PhD in 1990.
He then became a top official at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and later the Dutch Central Bank, and returned in 1998 to his alma mater as a parttime professor in OCFEB Research Center on Financial Economic Policy. He held positions at the University of Zurich, in private banking and at the Dutch competition authority, the Directorate General for International Economic Relations and the Economic Policy Directorate.
In 2009 he became full professor of macroeconomics and international economics at the new EUR faculty ISS, where he stayed until his 13th PhD had successfully defended their thesis. The valedictory marks the last time that he leaves Erasmus University.
