They face violence and abuse from supervisors, 12-14 hour days and forced overtime, inadequate and overcrowded housing with pest infestations and mold, no heating in winter, no sick pay, and having to work while injured, unfair treatment, unhealthy and unsafe living conditions as well as a culture of fear which prevents workers from speaking up.
Farmworkers represented by the migrant organization Migrant Justice / Justicia Migrante in the US state of Vermont have called on Hannaford Supermarkets to take responsibility for the rights and well-being of the workers behind Hannaford-brand milk. This week, they will speak out during Ahold’s annual shareholder meeting in Amsterdam and demand Milk with Dignity from them.
'Lobbying Ahold for Milk with Dignity'
To raise awareness about the labour and human rights violations in the agri-food chain and about an alternative governance mechanism designed by migrant workers themselves as well as to build alliances with actors in the Netherlands, representatives of Migrant Justice will visit ISS for a talk on 'Lobbying Ahold for Milk with Dignity'.
