In this Migration seminar, Barbara Ravbar describes her PhD research exploring how European news agencies reported on Ukrainian refugees in 2022 versus Syrian refugees in 2015.

In the seminar - Refugee crisis through media lenses: Intersectionality of race, gender and xenophobia in reporting on the Ukrainian and Syrian refugee crisis - She explores how European news agencies reported on Ukrainian refugees in 2022 versus Syrian refugees in 2015.

These people have very different social, cultural, racial and ethnic backgrounds, so this research aims to shed light on whether the agency reporting contained potential prejudice when reporting on refugee issues.

She analyzes Deutsche Presse-Agentur, Agence France-Presse, Česká tisková kancelář, Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata, Hrvatska izvještajna novinska agencija and Polska Agencja Prasowa asking:

  • What frames are used when reporting on Syrian refugees?
  • What frames are used when reporting on the Ukrainian refugees?
  • Who speaks, and who is spoken for?
  • What are the key differences between reporting on
    Syrian and Ukrainian refugees?
  • What are the key differences between European news agencies when reporting on refugee issues?
  • How is intersectionality between race, gender and culture presented in the stories about refugees and migrants?
