dr. A (Amanda) da Silva Martins

Biography

I am a postdoc interdisciplinary researcher at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS, Erasmus University Rotterdam). My areas of interest are Public History, Decolonial Theory, Historical Fiction, Theory of History,  and Literary Writing.

I obtained my PhD (2017) in History at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) and was a visitant researcher (2015) at Ghent University (Belgium). My scholarly interests are not confined to traditional historical analysis. I have a strong background in literary creative writing, having published historical fiction tales and flash fictions. This creative dimension is an integral part of the research methodology of my current research, FLORISH – Fiction, Literature, Indigenous Storytelling and History.

The FLORISH project explores historical fiction as a tool for social transformation. I believe rethinking and rewriting the narratives around Indigenous peoples in Brazil in a context of co-existence with ecosystems is an urgent issue. My research combines discourse and intertextual analysis methods, qualitative interviews, and collaborative writing with Indigenous authors from Brazil to reshape modern/ colonial narratives in both academic and public domains.

FLORISH is mentored by Prof. Rosalba Icaza and funded by the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships under the European Union’s Horizon 2023 research and innovation program.
