On 18 October 2024, Jimena Pacheco Miranda successfully defended her PhD thesis exploring the impact of 3 shocks that affected Ecuador in 1999 (economic crisis), in 2016 (earthquake) and in 2020 (Covid pandemic).
Her dissertation comprised three essays assessing the effects of various shocks on health and education in Ecuador.
In the first essay, she argued that the 1999 economic crisis had long-term negative impacts on children born during that period, persisting over a decade after recovery. The second essay focused on the 2016 earthquake, claiming that despite the damage, increased resource allocation to affected areas improved educational outcomes. In the third essay, she contended that COVID-19 lockdowns led to poorer health in newborns, with exposed infants being lighter, shorter, and more likely to be underweight.
