ISS PhD researcher Ilaha Abasli has been awarded an RDI Kickstarter grant of €38,000 for a research project on just labour transitions in the repair sector in the Rijnmond region in the Netherlands.

Repair is key to for the transition in the Netherlands towards a circular economy enabling extended use of products and services, reducing materials consumption and minimizing waste.

However, repair work is one of the most underpaid, undervalued, informal and least regulated area of circular labour. There is as yet not a comprehensive understanding of the expected, required and desired transitions that are needed to arrive at  just-valued labour in the repair sector.

This project aims to define gaps in skills, technology, infrastructure and policies and to co-develop a Fair Practice Code for the Repair Sector. It includes co-creation through workshops with experts and repair practitioners, taking into account financial and social regulations, labour rights and sustainability.

Other colleagues involved are Professor Peter Knorringa (ISS), Dr Ellen Loots (Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication) and Karlheinz Samenjo PhD researcher at TU Delft.
