Welcome to Professor Arul Chib who will join the International Institute of Social Studies as Professor of Technology and Development in September 2022.
Professor Chib investigates emergent digital technologies as transformational tools for marginalized populations in resource-constrained environments, focusing on the structural and relational contexts of power within which social change occurs.
He studies the healthcare settings of developing countries and transnational migration contexts. He argues that social justice is also garnered by individuals and communities via their communicative practices and appropriation of digital tools.
He is the co-editor of the Gender, Technology and Development journal and, as Director of the Singapore Internet Research Centre, led an ICTD mentorship programme for emerging researchers in the global south for a decade.
His research, mentorship and teaching have been recognized by the Scopus Award in Sustainable Development, in conjunction with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He has been awarded fellowships at Ludwig Maxmilians University and the University of Southern California.
His recent work includes Critical perspectives on Open Development: Theory and application (Chib, Bentley & Smith; 2021; MIT Press). He has studied and worked in Germany, India, Peru, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand and the United States of America.
