Dr Annika Schmeding (lecturer at the University of Amsterdam and senior researcher at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) will offer an ethnographically grounded journey of how religious civil society members navigate(d) war, violence and displacement in Afghanistan.
Her presentation weaves together Sufi thought and practice as they manifest in politics, history, education, literature, the arts and everyday life.
Dr Saad Ali (assistant professor at the Center of Excellence in Gender Studies, QAU (Islamabad) and visiting fellow at ISS) will explore the gendered dimensions of Sufi practice in Pakistan.
Through compelling narratives of Sufi women, his research examines critical questions about voice, authority and gender justice within contemporary Sufi spaces. Moving beyond theological frameworks, Dr Ali's work illuminates how gender hierarchies are practiced, mediated and legitimized in daily life through Sufism.
The lecuture will be followed by a Q&A discussion and a Tambur performance - a key musical instrument in Sufi tradition – by Muhammad Javad Khoshkoo.
