RGHI member Zemzem Shigute Shuka appointed to Board of Trustees KNCV Tuberculosefonds

The RGHI is proud that Dr. Zemzem Shigute Shuka has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the KNCV Tuberculosefonds. “I am excited to welcome Dr. Shuka to the Board of Trustees,” says Mirella Visser LL.M., Chair Supervisory Board KNCV. “Dr. Shuka brings very pertinent experience and insights from the Global South. This will strengthen the effectiveness of the Board in its oversight role. On the Board of Trustees we are greatly looking forward to working with Dr. Shuka.”

Zemzem Shigute Shuka is Assistant Professor of Global Health and Development at the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam. Additionally, she is a Research Affiliate at the Institute of Development and Policy Research, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. Her research interests include applied microeconomics in the areas of Global Health, Impact Evaluation of Social Protection Programs, Community-Based Health and Development Interventions, Human capital investments and labour markets.

Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Zemzem holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from Addis Ababa University and Master of Arts and PhD Degree in Development Studies specializing in Development Economics from the International Institute of Social studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam. She served in different capacities at several governmental and non-governmental organizations in Ethiopia. This included, among others, serving as a technical and capacity building assistance to the PSNP public works implementation unit in the Oromia Bureau of Agriculture. 

A new perspective in the Board of Trustees 

Dr. Shuka has been a resident of the Netherlands since September 2011, with active engagement in her home country and a keen interest in Global Health. Therefore, she will offer an essential economic and global health perspective grounded in the regions KNCV serves to inform the deliberations and guidance provided by the KNCV Board of Trustees. Dr. Shuka takes over from René Stumpel MD, Director of Public Health Gooi & Vechtstreek. Following his retirement from GGD/GHOR, René stepped down from the KNCV Board of Trustees year-end 2023.
